Build the World's Most
Ambitious Database.

Join a tiny, elite team building something that has never existed before — a single binary that replaces eight separate databases, scales from 64 KB microcontrollers to planetary-scale clusters, and never phones home.

Why Maree-DB

Most companies hire engineers to maintain existing systems. We're building something genuinely new — a database that does what no other database does, shipped as a single sovereign binary.

You won't maintain a legacy codebase. You'll write code that runs on microcontrollers and on stock exchange infrastructure using the same binary. You'll see your work in production systems that cannot tolerate errors.

Replacing 8 separate databases with one binary — SQL, vector, graph, time-series, KV, document, columnar, spatial, all in one Rust codebase.

Stock exchange performance, military-grade security — sub-millisecond queries, cryptographic integrity on every write, autonomous ransomware detection.

IoT to planetary scale from one codebase — the same engine compiles to 64 KB for ARM Cortex-M and serves millions of connections in a distributed cluster.

Sovereign — zero telemetry, zero dependencies, air-gap deployable — no cloud provider, no external services, no phone-home. Your users own their data completely.

5,574+ tests, 34 patents pending, built in Launceston, Tasmania — an Australian product proving that world-class infrastructure software can come from anywhere.

Our Values

These aren't aspirational statements on a wall. They're how we make daily decisions.

Correctness over speed

We ship when it's right, not when the deadline says so. A bug in a database is not recoverable with a hotfix. We verify everything — 5,574+ tests say so.

Simplicity over complexity

The best code is the code that doesn't exist. We don't add abstraction layers for their own sake. Every line of code is a liability; we earn every line we keep.

Ownership over process

You own systems, not tickets. When something is wrong in your domain, you fix it — you don't wait for a sprint ceremony to authorise the work.

Craftsmanship over shortcuts

We build things that last. Code that looks right but works by accident is a time bomb. We care about the internals even when no user will ever see them.

Transparency over marketing

We ship a self-verification tool so users can independently confirm every performance claim. We don't hide behind benchmarks we control. We welcome scrutiny.

Open Positions

All roles are fully remote. We hire for excellence, not geography.

Senior Systems Engineer (Rust)
Remote Equity + Salary Systems
AUD $180K–$250K + equity

Work on the core database engine in Rust. Own entire subsystems — storage engines, wire protocol implementations, query execution, distributed consensus, or cryptographic security. Every line you write runs in production environments where correctness is non-negotiable.

What you'll own:

  • Core database engine components in Rust (storage, query execution, wire protocols)
  • B+Tree / LSM-Tree storage engines, write-ahead log, buffer pool management
  • MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or Redis wire protocol implementation
  • Performance profiling, hardware-accelerated optimisation, lock-free data structures

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of systems programming experience (Rust, C, or C++)
  • Deep understanding of data structures, algorithms, and memory management
  • Experience with database internals, distributed systems, or embedded systems
  • Comfort with reading academic papers and implementing algorithms from first principles

Technical Manager / VP Engineering
Remote Equity-first Leadership
Equity-first + success-triggered salary

A founding-team role. You will shape the engineering culture, drive architecture decisions, build the team, and be a technical peer — not just a process manager. You'll report directly to the founder and have genuine authority over how we build.

What you'll own:

  • Engineering culture, hiring decisions, and team structure as we scale
  • Architecture decisions and technical direction across all subsystems
  • Cross-crate quality standards, release process, and engineering metrics
  • Direct contributor — this is not a pure management role

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of software engineering, with strong systems or infrastructure background
  • 3+ years leading engineering teams — track record of hiring and retaining excellent engineers
  • Strong technical opinions and the confidence to defend them and to be wrong
  • Experience at a company that has scaled a core infrastructure product

Developer Relations Engineer
Remote Equity + Salary DevRel
AUD $140K–$180K + equity

Be the bridge between the product and the developer community. Build tutorials, write documentation that doesn't read like documentation, speak at conferences, and create the technical content that makes developers trust Maree-DB before they try it.

What you'll own:

  • Community channels, developer forum, and social presence
  • Technical documentation, tutorials, and getting-started content
  • Conference presentations, workshop facilitation, and live coding demos
  • Developer feedback loop — making sure engineering hears what the community says

Requirements:

  • 3+ years in developer relations, technical writing, or developer advocacy
  • Comfortable with public speaking and live technical demos
  • Strong written communication — you can explain complex systems without jargon
  • Genuine interest in databases, distributed systems, or infrastructure

Product Marketing Manager
Remote Equity + Salary Marketing
AUD $130K–$170K + equity

Own how Maree-DB is positioned in a crowded market. Drive go-to-market strategy, create compelling competitive positioning against Oracle and AWS, and help enterprise buyers understand why Maree-DB is not just cheaper — it's technically superior.

What you'll own:

  • Messaging, positioning, and value proposition across all customer segments
  • GTM strategy for new releases and feature launches
  • Competitive analysis — Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB, and cloud databases
  • Sales enablement — battle cards, objection handling, technical comparisons

Requirements:

  • 3+ years in B2B SaaS product marketing, ideally infrastructure or database
  • Technical enough to understand the product, but first a marketer
  • Experience with enterprise sales cycles and working with sales teams
  • Strong data orientation — you measure what you do

Our Hiring Process

Five steps. No trick questions. No unpaid multi-week projects. We respect your time.

1

Assessment

30–60 minutes. Values alignment, technical thinking, and working style. No gotcha questions.

2

Technical Conversation

30 minutes. A two-way conversation — we want to understand how you think, and you get to interrogate us.

3

Paid Technical Challenge

If it requires more than 2 hours, we pay for your time. No spec work for free.

4

Team Conversation

Informal. Meet the people you'd work with. Mutual fit assessment — we want you asking hard questions too.

5

Offer

Straightforward. Good faith. We explain every number. No exploding offers or artificial urgency.

How We Work

Remote-first, async-first, high-trust, high-standards. No theatre.

Remote-first, anywhere

Work from wherever you do your best work. All communication is async-first — your location doesn't disadvantage you.

Full ownership of systems

You own the systems you build. Not tickets assigned to you — systems. You make architectural decisions, you monitor them, you improve them.

No bureaucracy

No mandatory standups. No Jira velocity tracking. No OKR theatre. You know what good work looks like — go do it.

Extraordinary standards

We hold ourselves to standards that most companies would consider excessive. Zero warnings. 100% tests. Every algorithm cited. That's non-negotiable.

Learn from first principles

You'll implement algorithms from academic papers, not third-party libraries. You'll understand why every piece works, not just that it works.

Meaningful equity

Early-stage equity in a product with genuine IP, 34 patents pending, and no external investors. Your upside is real.
